A Trip to the After World

Between mountainous landscapes, South Sulawesi is blanketed with fishing villages and fertile soil for growing crops. The Buginese, Makassarese and Mandarese indigenous groups are skillful and fearless seafaring fishers, while Torajans are renowned for their massive peaked-roof traditional houses known as Tongkonan with colorful wood carvings based on nature’s abstracts and geometrical designs and their elaborate funeral rites and ancient animism beliefs. The funeral ritual is extremely elaborate and includes a death feast, buffalo sacrifice, and cliff, cave and stone burials. A visit to Toraja on Sulawesi Island is a trip to the after world!

Tentative Schedule

Day 1: Makassar Airport – Pare Pare – Toraja

1. Arrive at Makassar Airport
2. Drive to Toraja (8 hour drive)
3. Lunch will be served at Local Restaurant in Pare – Pare
4. Puncak Lakawan and enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Erotic mountain
5. Arrive in Toraja, check-in to Hotel
6. Dinner

Day 2: Full Day Toraja Tour

1. Breakfast at hotel
2. Full day tour:
   • The stone grave at LEMO
   • Royal family tombs at SUAYA
   • Burial site for a baby at KAMBIRA
   • The traditional village at KETE KESU
   • Lunch will be served at local restaurant
   • Natural burial cave at LONDA
   • The ancient house-grave at MARANTE village
3. Dinner

Day 3: Full Day Toraja Tour

1. Breakfast at hotel
2. Full day tour:
   • The Traditional Toraja village at Palawa
   • Traditional weaving village at Sa’dan
   • The ancient Megalithic stone at Bori
   • Exploring Batutumonga
   • Lunch will be served at local restaurant
   • Traditional Village Nanggala
3. Diner at hotel
4. *Option: Small trekking from Lokomata to Pana

Day 4: Toraja – Sengkang – Lake Tempe

1. Breakfast at hotel (Toraja)
2. Heading for Sengkang
3. Check in Hotel. Lunch will be served at local restaurant
4. Visit Lake TEMPE to see daily activity of those who live at the lakeside
5. Dinner

Day 5: Sengkang – Bira (White Sandy Beach)

1. Breakfast
2. Drive to Tanjung Bira
3. Lunch will be served at local restaurant
4. Arrive at Tanjung Bira, Check in Hotel
5. Free Program (enjoy the beautiful sunset from Bira Beach)
6. Dinner

Day 6 : Bira

1. Breakfast
2. Visit Tana Beru to watch the boat masters building traditional Phinisi boats
3. Drive to Makassar. Check in Hotel
4. Dinner

Day 7: Makassar – Airport

1. Breakfast at hotel
2. A short city tour in Makassar
3. Lunch
4. Drive to Airport for your next destination (noon flight)
